2020-08-21libqemuutil, qapi, trace: convert to mesonPaolo Bonzini
This shows how to do some "computations" in meson.build using its array and dictionary data structures, and also a basic usage of the sourceset module for conditional compilation. Notice the new "if have_system" part of util/meson.build, which fixes a bug in the old build system was buggy: util/dbus.c was built even for non-softmmu builds, but the dependency on -lgio was lost when the linking was done through libqemuutil.a. Because all of its users required gio otherwise, the bug was hidden. Meson instead propagates libqemuutil's dependencies down to its users, and shows the problem. 2017-03-28trace: fix tcg tracing build breakageStefan Hajnoczi
Commit 0ab8ed18a6fe98bfc82705b0f041fbf2a8ca5b60 ("trace: switch to modular code generation for sub-directories") forgot to convert "tcg" trace events to the modular code generation approach where each sub-directory has its own trace-events file. This patch fixes compilation for "tcg" trace events. Currently they are only used in the root ./trace-events file. "tcg" trace events can only be used in the root ./trace-events file for the time being. Reported-by: Peter Maydell <peter.maydell@linaro.org> Tested-by: Emilio G. 2017-03-16trace: ensure $(tracetool-y) is defined in top level makefileDaniel P. Berrange
The build rules for trace files have a dependancy on $(tracetool-y). This variable populated in the trace/Makefile.objs file and thus its definition gets pulled into the top level makefile. This happens too late in the process though, so by the time $(tracetool-y) is defined, make has already evaluated $(tracetool-y) in the dependancies and found it to be empty. The result is that when the tracetool source is changed, the generated files are not rebuilt. The solution is to define the variable in the top level makefile too Signed-off-by: Daniel P. 2017-01-31trace: switch to modular code generation for sub-directoriesDaniel P. Berrange
Introduce rules in the top level Makefile that are able to generate trace.[ch] files in every subdirectory which has a trace-events file. The top level directory is handled specially, so instead of creating trace.h, it creates trace-root.h. This allows sub-directories to include the top level trace-root.h file, without ambiguity wrt to the trace.g file in the current sub-dir. 2017-01-31trace: move setting of group name into MakefilesDaniel P. Berrange
Having tracetool.py figure out the right group name from just the input filename is not practical when considering the different build vs src path combinations. Instead simply take the group name as a command line arg from the Makefile, which can trivially provide the right name. Reviewed-by: Stefan Hajnoczi <stefanha@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Daniel P. 2016-10-12trace: get rid of generated-events.h/generated-events.cDaniel P. Berrange
Currently the generated-events.[ch] files contain the event dstates, constants and TraceEvent structs, while the generated-tracers.[ch] files contain the actual trace probe logic. With the removal of usage of the event enums from the API there is no longer any compelling reason for the separation between these files. The generated-events.h content is only ever needed from the generated-tracers.[ch] files. The enums/constants/structs from generated-events.[ch] are thus moved into the generated-tracers.[ch], so that there is one less file to be generated. 2016-10-06rules.mak: quiet-command: Split command name and args to printPeter Maydell
The quiet-command make rule currently takes two arguments: the command and arguments to run, and a string to print if the V flag is not set (ie we are not being verbose). By convention, the string printed is of the form " NAME some args". Unfortunately to get nicely lined up output all the strings have to agree about what column the arguments should start in, which means that if we add a new quiet-command usage which wants a slightly longer CMD name then we either put up with misalignment or change every quiet-command string. Split the quiet-mode string into two, the "NAME" and the "same args" part, and use printf(1) to format the string automatically. This means we only need to change one place if we want to support a longer maximum name. In particular, we can now print 7-character names lined up properly (they are needed for the OSX "SETTOOL" invocation). Change all the uses of quiet-command to the new syntax. (Any which are missed or inadvertently reintroduced via later merges will result in slightly misformatted quiet output rather than disaster.) A few places in the pc-bios/ makefiles are updated to use "BUILD", "SIGN" and "STRIP" rather than "Building", "Signing" and "Stripping" for consistency and to keep them below 7 characters. Module .mo links now print "LD" rather than the nonstandard "LD -r". 2016-01-07trace: add make dependencies on tracetool sourceStefan Hajnoczi
Patches that change tracetool can break the build if old build output files are lying around. This happens because the Makefile does not specify dependencies on tracetool. 2016-01-07trace: fix make foo-timestamp rulesStefan Hajnoczi
The Makefile uses intermediate timestamp files to avoid rebuilding if tracetool output is unchanged. Timestamps are implemented incorrectly. This was fixed for rules.mak in commit 4b25966ab976f3a7fd9008193b2defcc82f8f04d ("rules.mak: cleanup config generation rules") but never fixed in trace/Makefile.objs. The problem with the old timestamp implementation was that make doesn't notice the updated file modification time until the next time it is run. It was necessary to run make twice in a row to achieve a full rebuild. Signed-off-by: Stefan Hajnoczi <stefanha@redhat.com>

2014-06-09trace: Multi-backend tracingLluís Vilanova
Adds support to compile QEMU with multiple tracing backends at the same time. For example, you can compile QEMU with: $ ./configure --enable-trace-backends=ftrace,dtrace Where 'ftrace' can be handy for having an in-flight record of events, and 'dtrace' can be later used to extract more information from the system. 2013-05-03trace: Add ftrace tracing backendEiichi Tsukata
This patch adds a ftrace tracing backend which sends trace event to ftrace marker file. You can effectively compare qemu trace data and kernel(especially, kvm.ko when using KVM) trace data. The ftrace backend is restricted to Linux only. To try out the ftrace backend: $ ./configure --trace-backend=ftrace $ make if you use KVM, enable kvm events in ftrace: # sudo echo 1 > /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/kvm/enable After running qemu by root user, you can get the trace: # cat /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/trace Signed-off-by: Eiichi Tsukata <eiichi.tsukata.xh@hitachi.com> Signed-off-by: Stefan Hajnoczi <stefanha@redhat.com>

2013-03-28trace: Provide a generic tracing event descriptorLluís Vilanova
Uses tracetool to generate a backend-independent tracing event description (struct TraceEvent). The values for such structure are generated with the non-public "events" backend ("events-c" frontend).
