2024-08-05qapi: Refill doc comments to conform to conventionsMarkus Armbruster
Sweep the entire documentation again. Last done in commit 209e64d9edf (qapi: Refill doc comments to conform to current conventions). To check the generated documentation does not change, I compared the generated HTML before and after this commit with "wdiff -3". Finds no differences. Comparing with diff is not useful, as the reflown paragraphs are visible there. 2024-07-17qapi: convert "Example" sections without titlesJohn Snow
Use the no-option form of ".. qmp-example::" to convert any Examples that do not have any form of caption or explanation whatsoever. Note that in a few cases, example sections are split into two or more separate example blocks. This is only done stylistically to create a delineation between two or more logically independent examples. See commit-3: "docs/qapidoc: create qmp-example directive", for a detailed explanation of this custom directive syntax. See commit+3: "qapi: remove "Example" doc section" for a detailed explanation of why. Note: an empty "TODO" line was added to announce-self to keep the example from floating up into the body; this will be addressed more rigorously in the new qapidoc generator. 2024-07-06qapi: add markup to note blocksJohn Snow
Generally, surround command-line options with ``literal`` markup to help it stand out from prose in rendered HTML, and add cross-references to replace "see also" messages. References to types, values, and other QAPI definitions are not yet adjusted here; they will be converted en masse in a subsequent patch after the new QAPI doc generator is merged. 2024-07-06qapi: convert "Note" sections to plain rSTJohn Snow
We do not need a dedicated section for notes. By eliminating a specially parsed section, these notes can be treated as normal rST paragraphs in the new QMP reference manual, and can be placed and styled much more flexibly. Convert all existing "Note" and "Notes" sections to pure rST. As part of the conversion, capitalize the first letter of each sentence and add trailing punctuation where appropriate to ensure notes look sensible and consistent in rendered HTML documentation. Markup is also re-aligned to the de-facto standard of 3 spaces for directives. Update docs/devel/qapi-code-gen.rst to reflect the new paradigm, and update the QAPI parser to prohibit "Note" sections while suggesting a new syntax. The exact formatting to use is a matter of taste, but a good candidate is simply: .. note:: lorem ipsum ... ... dolor sit amet ... ... consectetur adipiscing elit ... ... but there are other choices, too. The Sphinx readthedocs theme offers theming for the following forms (capitalization unimportant); all are adorned with a (!) symbol () in the title bar for rendered HTML docs. See https://sphinx-rtd-theme.readthedocs.io/en/stable/demo/demo.html#admonitions for examples of each directive/admonition in use. These are rendered in orange: .. Attention:: ... .. Caution:: ... .. WARNING:: ... These are rendered in red: .. DANGER:: ... .. Error:: ... These are rendered in green: .. Hint:: ... .. Important:: ... .. Tip:: ... These are rendered in blue: .. Note:: ... .. admonition:: custom title admonition body text This patch uses ".. note::" almost everywhere, with just two "caution" directives. Several instances of "Notes:" have been converted to merely ".. note::", or multiple ".. note::" where appropriate. ".. admonition:: notes" is used in a few places where we had an ordered list of multiple notes that would not make sense as standalone/separate admonitions. Two "Note:" following "Example:" have been turned into ordinary paragraphs within the example. NOTE: Because qapidoc.py does not attempt to preserve source ordering of sections, the conversion of Notes from a "tagged section" to an "untagged section" means that rendering order for some notes *may change* as a result of this patch. The forthcoming qapidoc.py rewrite strictly preserves source ordering in the rendered documentation, so this issue will be rectified in the new generator. A few examples neglect to prefix QMP input with '->'. Fix that. Two examples have extra space after '<-'. Delete it. A few examples neglect to show output. Provide some. The example output for query-vcpu-dirty-limit could use further improvement. Add a TODO comment. Use "Examples:" instead of "Example:" where multiple examples are given. 2022-01-14softmmu: fix device deletion events with -device JSON syntaxDaniel P. Berrangé
The -device JSON syntax impl leaks a reference on the created DeviceState instance. As a result when you hot-unplug the device, the device_finalize method won't be called and thus it will fail to emit the required DEVICE_DELETED event. A 'json-cli' feature was previously added against the 'device_add' QMP command QAPI schema to indicated to mgmt apps that -device supported JSON syntax. Given the hotplug bug that feature flag is not usable for its purpose, so we add a new 'json-cli-hotplug' feature to indicate the -device supports JSON without breaking hotplug. 2021-10-15vl: Enable JSON syntax for -deviceKevin Wolf
Like we already do for -object, introduce support for JSON syntax in -device, which can be kept stable in the long term and guarantees that a single code path with identical behaviour is used for both QMP and the command line. Compared to the QemuOpts based code, the parser contains less surprises and has support for non-scalar options (lists and structs). Switching management tools to JSON means that we can more easily change the "human" CLI syntax from QemuOpts to the keyval parser later. In the QAPI schema, a feature flag is added to the device-add command to allow management tools to detect support for this. 2021-09-30qapi/qdev.json: add DEVICE_UNPLUG_GUEST_ERROR QAPI eventDaniel Henrique Barboza
At this moment we only provide one event to report a hotunplug error, MEM_UNPLUG_ERROR. As of Linux kernel 5.12 and QEMU 6.0.0, the pseries machine is now able to report unplug errors for other device types, such as CPUs. Instead of creating a (device_type)_UNPLUG_ERROR for each new device, create a generic DEVICE_UNPLUG_GUEST_ERROR event that can be used by all guest side unplug errors in the future. This event has a similar API as the existing DEVICE_DELETED event, always providing the QOM path of the device and dev->id if there's any. With this new generic event, MEM_UNPLUG_ERROR is now marked as deprecated. 2020-08-03schemas: Add vim modelineAndrea Bolognani
The various schemas included in QEMU use a JSON-based format which is, however, strictly speaking not valid JSON. As a consequence, when vim tries to apply syntax highlight rules for JSON (as guessed from the file name), the result is an unreadable mess which mostly consist of red markers pointing out supposed errors in, well, pretty much everything. Using Python syntax highlighting produces much better results, and in fact these files already start with specially-formatted comments that instruct Emacs to process them as if they were Python files. This commit adds the equivalent special comments for vim. Signed-off-by: Andrea Bolognani <abologna@redhat.com> Message-Id: <20200729185024.121766-1-abologna@redhat.com> Reviewed-by: Daniel P. 2020-02-15qapi: Fix indent level on doc comments in json filesPeter Maydell
The current doc generation doesn't care much about indentation levels, but we would like to switch to an rST format, and rST does care about indentation. Make the doc comments more strongly consistent about indentation for multiline constructs like: @arg: description line 1 description line 2 Returns: line one line 2 so that there is always exactly one space after the colon, and subsequent lines align with the first. This commit is a purely whitespace change, and it does not alter the generated .texi files (because the texi generation code strips away all the extra whitespace). This does mean that we end up with some over-length lines. Note that when the documentation for an argument fits on a single line like this: @arg: one line only then stray extra spaces after the ':' don't affect the rST output, so I have not attempted to methodically fix them, though the preference is a single space here too.
