The VirtIOBlock::rq field has had the type void * since its introduction
in commit 869a5c6df19a ("Stop VM on error in virtio-blk. (Gleb
Natapov)").
Perhaps this was done to avoid the forward declaration of
VirtIOBlockReq.
Hanna Czenczek <hreitz@redhat.com> pointed out the missing type. Specify
the actual type because there is no need to use void * here.

The dataplane code is really about using ioeventfd. It's used both for
IOThreads (what we think of as dataplane) and for the core virtio-pci
code's ioeventfd feature (which is enabled by default and used when no
IOThread has been specified). Rename the code to reflect this.

The dataplane code used to be significantly different from the
non-dataplane code and therefore had a separate source file.
Over time the difference has gotten smaller because the I/O code paths
were unified. Nowadays the distinction between the VirtIOBlock and
VirtIOBlockDataPlane structs is more of an inconvenience that hinders
code simplification.
Move hw/block/dataplane/virtio-blk.c into hw/block/virtio-blk.c, merging
VirtIOBlockDataPlane's fields into VirtIOBlock.
hw/block/virtio-blk.c used VirtIOBlock->dataplane to check if
virtio_blk_data_plane_create() was successful. This is not necessary
because ->dataplane_started and ->dataplane_disabled can be used
instead. This patch makes those changes in order to drop
VirtIOBlock->dataplane.

Add the iothread-vq-mapping parameter to assign virtqueues to IOThreads.
Store the vq:AioContext mapping in the new struct
VirtIOBlockDataPlane->vq_aio_context[] field and refactor the code to
use the per-vq AioContext instead of the BlockDriverState's AioContext.
Reimplement --device virtio-blk-pci,iothread= and non-IOThread mode by
assigning all virtqueues to the IOThread and main loop's AioContext in
vq_aio_context[], respectively.
The comment in struct VirtIOBlockDataPlane about EventNotifiers is
stale. Remove it.

virtio_blk_dma_restart_cb() is tricky because the BH must deal with
virtio_blk_data_plane_start()/virtio_blk_data_plane_stop() being called.
There are two issues with the code:
1. virtio_blk_realize() should use qdev_add_vm_change_state_handler()
instead of qemu_add_vm_change_state_handler(). This ensures the
ordering with virtio_init()'s vm change state handler that calls
virtio_blk_data_plane_start()/virtio_blk_data_plane_stop() is
well-defined. Then blk's AioContext is guaranteed to be up-to-date in
virtio_blk_dma_restart_cb() and it's no longer necessary to have a
special case for virtio_blk_data_plane_start().
2. Only blk_drain() waits for virtio_blk_dma_restart_cb()'s
blk_inc_in_flight() to be decremented. The bdrv_drain() family of
functions do not wait for BlockBackend's in_flight counter to reach
zero. virtio_blk_data_plane_stop() relies on blk_set_aio_context()'s
implicit drain, but that's a bdrv_drain() and not a blk_drain().
Note that virtio_blk_reset() already correctly relies on blk_drain().
If virtio_blk_data_plane_stop() switches to blk_drain() then we can
properly wait for pending virtio_blk_dma_restart_bh() calls.
Once these issues are taken care of the code becomes simpler. This
change is in preparation for multiple IOThreads in virtio-blk where we
need to clean up the multi-threading behavior.
I ran the reproducer from commit 49b44549ace7 ("virtio-blk: On restart,
process queued requests in the proper context") to check that there is
no regression.

The return value of virtio_blk_handle_vq() is no longer used. Get rid of
it. This is a step towards unifying the dataplane and non-dataplane
virtqueue handler functions.
Prepare virtio_blk_handle_output() to be used by both dataplane and
non-dataplane by making the condition for starting ioeventfd more

Fuzzing discovered that virtqueue_unmap_sg() is being called on modified
req->in/out_sg iovecs. This means dma_memory_map() and
dma_memory_unmap() calls do not have matching memory addresses.
Fuzzing discovered that non-RAM addresses trigger a bug:
void address_space_unmap(AddressSpace *as, void *buffer, hwaddr len,
bool is_write, hwaddr access_len)
{
if (buffer != bounce.buffer) {
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
A modified iov->iov_base is no longer recognized as a bounce buffer and
the wrong branch is taken.
There are more potential bugs: dirty memory is not tracked correctly and
MemoryRegion refcounts can be leaked.
Use the new iov_discard_undo() API to restore elem->in/out_sg before
virtqueue_push() is called.

Automatically size the number of virtio-blk-pci request virtqueues to
match the number of vCPUs. Other transports continue to default to 1
request virtqueue.
A 1:1 virtqueue:vCPU mapping ensures that completion interrupts are
handled on the same vCPU that submitted the request. No IPI is
necessary to complete an I/O request and performance is improved. The
maximum number of MSI-X vectors and virtqueues limit are respected.
Performance improves from 78k to 104k IOPS on a 32 vCPU guest with 101
virtio-blk-pci devices (ioengine=libaio, iodepth=1, bs=4k, rw=randread
with NVMe storage).

On restart, we were scheduling a BH to process queued requests, which
would run before starting up the data plane, leading to those requests
being assigned and started on coroutines on the main context.
This could cause requests to be wrongly processed in parallel from
different threads (the main thread and the iothread managing the data
plane), potentially leading to multiple issues.
For example, stopping and resuming a VM multiple times while the guest
is generating I/O on a virtio_blk device can trigger a crash with a
stack tracing looking like this one:

Before the patch, seg_max parameter was immutable and hardcoded
to 126 (128 - 2) without respect to queue size. This has two negative effects:
1. when queue size is < 128, we have Virtio 1.1 specfication violation:
(2.6.5.3.1 Driver Requirements) seq_max must be <= queue_size.
This violation affects the old Linux guests (ver < 4.14). These guests
crash on these queue_size setups.
2. when queue_size > 128, as was pointed out by Denis Lunev <den@virtuozzo.com>,
seg_max restrics guest's block request length which affects guests'
performance making them issues more block request than needed.
https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/qemu-devel/2017-12/msg03721.html
To mitigate this two effects, the patch adds the property adjusting seg_max
to queue size automaticaly. Since seg_max is a guest visible parameter,
the property is machine type managable and allows to choose between
old (seg_max = 126 always) and new (seg_max = queue_size - 2) behaviors.
Not to change the behavior of the older VMs, prevent setting the default
seg_max_adjust value for older machine types.

Virtio spec 1.1 (and earlier), 5.2.5.2 Driver Requirements: Device
Initialization:
"Devices SHOULD always offer VIRTIO_BLK_F_FLUSH, and MUST offer it if
they offer VIRTIO_BLK_F_CONFIG_WCE"
Currently F_CONFIG_WCE and F_WCE are not connected to each other.
Qemu will advertise F_CONFIG_WCE if config-wce argument is
set for virtio-blk device. And F_WCE is advertised only if
underlying block backend actually has it's caching enabled.
Fix this by advertising F_WCE if F_CONFIG_WCE is also advertised.
To preserve backwards compatibility with newer machine types make this
behaviour governed by "x-enable-wce-if-config-wce" virtio-blk-device
property and introduce hw_compat_4_2 with new property being off by
default for all machine types <= 4.2 (but don't introduce 4.3
machine type itself yet).

Since configurable features for virtio-blk are growing, this patch
adds host_features field in the struct VirtIOBlock. (as in virtio-net)
In this way, we can avoid to add new fields for new properties and
we can directly set VIRTIO_BLK_F* flags in the host_features.
We update "config-wce" and "scsi" property definition to use the new
host_features field without change the behaviour.

In virtio_queue_host_notifier_aio_poll, not all "!virtio_queue_empty()"
cases are making true progress.
Currently the offending one is virtio-scsi event queue, whose handler
does nothing if no event is pending. As a result aio_poll() will spin on
the "non-empty" VQ and take 100% host CPU.
Fix this by reporting actual progress from virtio queue aio handlers.

In addition to handling IO in vcpu thread and in io thread, dataplane
introduces yet another mode: handling it by AioContext.
This reuses the same handler as previous modes, which triggers races as
these were not designed to be reentrant. Use a separate handler just
for aio, and disable regular handlers when dataplane is active.

In disabled mode, virtio-blk dataplane seems to be enabled, but flow
actually goes through the normal virtio path. This patch simplifies a bit
the handling of disabled mode. In disabled mode, virtio_blk_handle_output
might be called even if s->dataplane is not NULL.
This is a bit tricky, because the current check for s->dataplane will
always trigger, causing a continuous stream of calls to
virtio_blk_data_plane_start. Unfortunately, these calls will not
do anything. To fix this, set the "started" flag even in disabled
mode, and skip virtio_blk_data_plane_start if the started flag is true.
The resulting changes also prepare the code for the next patch, were
virtio-blk dataplane will reuse the same virtio_blk_handle_output function
as "regular" virtio-blk.
Because struct VirtIOBlockDataPlane is opaque in virtio-blk.c, we have
to move s->dataplane->started inside struct VirtIOBlock.

The return code of virtqueue_pop/vring_pop is unused except to check for
errors or 0. We can thus easily move allocation inside the functions
and just return a pointer to the VirtQueueElement.
The advantage is that we will be able to allocate only the space that
is needed for the actual size of the s/g list instead of the full
VIRTQUEUE_MAX_SIZE items. Currently VirtQueueElement takes about 48K
of memory, and this kind of allocation puts a lot of stress on malloc.
By cutting the size by two or three orders of magnitude, malloc can
use much more efficient algorithms.
The patch is pretty large, but changes to each device are testable
more or less independently. Splitting it would mostly add churn.

The next patch will make virtqueue_pop/vring_pop allocate memory for
the VirtQueueElement. In some cases (blk, scsi, gpu) the device wants
to extend VirtQueueElement with device-specific fields and, until now,
the place of the VirtQueueElement within the containing struct didn't
matter. When allocating the entire block in virtqueue_pop/vring_pop,
however, the containing struct must basically be a "subclass" of
VirtQueueElement, with the VirtQueueElement as the first field. Make
that the case for blk and scsi; gpu is already doing it.

After qemu_iovec_destroy, the QEMUIOVector's size is zeroed and
the zero size ultimately is used to compute virtqueue_push's len
argument. Therefore, reads from virtio-blk devices did not
migrate their results correctly. (Writes were okay).
Save the size in virtio_blk_handle_request, and use it when the request

this patch finally introduces multiread support to virtio-blk. While
multiwrite support was there for a long time, read support was missing.
The complete merge logic is moved into virtio-blk.c which has
been the only user of request merging ever since. This is required
to be able to merge chunks of requests and immediately invoke callbacks
for those requests. Secondly, this is required to switch to
direct invocation of coroutines which is planned at a later stage.
The following benchmarks show the performance of running fio with
4 worker threads on a local ram disk. The numbers show the average
of 10 test runs after 1 run as warmup phase.

Device models should access their block backends only through the
block-backend.h API. Convert them, and drop direct includes of
inappropriate headers.
Just four uses of BlockDriverState are left:
* The Xen paravirtual block device backend (xen_disk.c) opens images
itself when set up via xenbus, bypassing blockdev.c. I figure it
should go through qmp_blockdev_add() instead.
* Device model "usb-storage" prompts for keys. No other device model
does, and this one probably shouldn't do it, either.
* ide_issue_trim_cb() uses bdrv_aio_discard() instead of
blk_aio_discard() because it fishes its backend out of a BlockAIOCB,
which has only the BlockDriverState.
* PC87312State has an unused BlockDriverState[] member.

The plan is to add new accounting metrics (latency, invalid requests, failed
requests, queue depth) and block.c is overpopulated so it will be better to work
in a separate module.
Moreover the long term plan is to have statistics in each of the BDS of the graph
for metrology purpose; this means that the device model statistics must move from
the topmost BDS to the device model.
So we need to decouple the statistic code from BlockDriverState.
This is another argument for the extraction of the code in a separate module.

The memory allocation between hw/block/virtio-blk.c,
hw/block/dataplane/virtio-blk.c, and hw/virtio/dataplane/vring.c is
messy. Structs are allocated in different files than they are freed in.
This is risky and makes memory leaks easier.

allocation we need to juggle. This also makes vring.c and virtio.c
slightly more similar.
