2024-07-09memory: remove IOMMU MR iommu_set_page_size_mask() callbackEric Auger
Everything is now in place to use the Host IOMMU Device callbacks to retrieve the page size mask usable with a given assigned device. This new method brings the advantage to pass the info much earlier to the virtual IOMMU and before the IOMMU MR gets enabled. Retrieve the Host IOMMU Device page size mask when this latter is set. This allows to get the information much sooner than when relying on IOMMU MR set_page_size_mask() call, whcih happens when the IOMMU MR gets enabled. We introduce check_page_size_mask() helper whose code is inherited from current virtio_iommu_set_page_size_mask() implementation. This callback will be removed in a subsequent patch. 2024-03-26vdpa-dev: Fix initialisation order to restore VDUSE compatibilityKevin Wolf
VDUSE requires that virtqueues are first enabled before the DRIVER_OK status flag is set; with the current API of the kernel module, it is impossible to enable the opposite order in our block export code because userspace is not notified when a virtqueue is enabled. This requirement also mathces the normal initialisation order as done by the generic vhost code in QEMU. However, commit 6c482547 accidentally changed the order for vdpa-dev and broke access to VDUSE devices with this. This changes vdpa-dev to use the normal order again and use the standard vhost callback .vhost_set_vring_enable for this. VDUSE devices can be used with vdpa-dev again after this fix. vhost_net intentionally avoided enabling the vrings for vdpa and does this manually later while it does enable them for other vhost backends. Reflect this in the vhost_net code and return early for vdpa, so that the behaviour doesn't change for this device. Sometimes, certain parts are not being skipped in vhost_vdpa_listener_region_del, but they are skipped in vhost_vdpa_listener_region_add, or vice versa. Up to now we were exposing to the RESV_MEM probe requests the reserved memory regions set though the reserved-regions array property. Combine those with the host reserved memory regions if any. Those latter are tagged as RESERVED. We don't have more information about them besides then cannot be mapped. Reserved regions set by property have higher priority. 2023-10-31virtio: use defer_call() in virtio_irqfd_notify()Stefan Hajnoczi
virtio-blk and virtio-scsi invoke virtio_irqfd_notify() to send Used Buffer Notifications from an IOThread. This involves an eventfd write(2) syscall. Calling this repeatedly when completing multiple I/O requests in a row is wasteful. Use the defer_call() API to batch together virtio_irqfd_notify() calls made during thread pool (aio=threads), Linux AIO (aio=native), and io_uring (aio=io_uring) completion processing. Behavior is unchanged for emulated devices that do not use defer_call_begin()/defer_call_end() since defer_call() immediately invokes the callback when called outside a defer_call_begin()/defer_call_end() region. fio rw=randread bs=4k iodepth=64 numjobs=8 IOPS increases by ~9% with a single IOThread and 8 vCPUs. iodepth=1 decreases by ~1% but this could be noise. 2023-07-10virtio-iommu: Fix 64kB host page size VFIO device assignmentEric Auger
When running on a 64kB page size host and protecting a VFIO device with the virtio-iommu, qemu crashes with this kind of message: qemu-kvm: virtio-iommu page mask 0xfffffffffffff000 is incompatible with mask 0x20010000 qemu: hardware error: vfio: DMA mapping failed, unable to continue This is due to the fact the IOMMU MR corresponding to the VFIO device is enabled very late on domain attach, after the machine init. The device reports a minimal 64kB page size but it is too late to be applied. virtio_iommu_set_page_size_mask() fails and this causes vfio_listener_region_add() to end up with hw_error(); To work around this issue, we transiently enable the IOMMU MR on machine init to collect the page size requirements and then restore the bypass state. With TPM CRM device, vhost-vdpa reports an error when it tries to register a listener for a non aligned memory region: qemu-system-x86_64: vhost_vdpa_listener_region_add received unaligned region qemu-system-x86_64: vhost_vdpa_listener_region_del received unaligned region This error can be confusing for the user whereas we only need to skip the region (as it's already done after the error_report()) Rather than introducing a special case for TPM CRB memory section to not display the message in this case, simply replace the error_report() by a trace function (with more information, like the memory region name). 2023-03-07vdpa: add vhost_vdpa_suspendEugenio Pérez
The function vhost.c:vhost_dev_stop fetches the vring base so the vq state can be migrated to other devices. However, this is unreliable in vdpa, since we didn't signal the device to suspend the queues, making the value fetched useless. Suspend the device if possible before fetching first and subsequent vring bases. Moreover, vdpa totally reset and wipes the device at the last device before fetch its vrings base, making that operation useless in the last device. This will be fixed in later patches of this series. 2022-12-01vhost: enable vrings in vhost_dev_start() for vhost-user devicesStefano Garzarella
Commit 02b61f38d3 ("hw/virtio: incorporate backend features in features") properly negotiates VHOST_USER_F_PROTOCOL_FEATURES with the vhost-user backend, but we forgot to enable vrings as specified in docs/interop/vhost-user.rst: If ``VHOST_USER_F_PROTOCOL_FEATURES`` has not been negotiated, the ring starts directly in the enabled state. If ``VHOST_USER_F_PROTOCOL_FEATURES`` has been negotiated, the ring is initialized in a disabled state and is enabled by ``VHOST_USER_SET_VRING_ENABLE`` with parameter 1. Some vhost-user front-ends already did this by calling vhost_ops.vhost_set_vring_enable() directly: - backends/cryptodev-vhost.c - hw/net/virtio-net.c - hw/virtio/vhost-user-gpio.c But most didn't do that, so we would leave the vrings disabled and some backends would not work. We observed this issue with the rust version of virtiofsd [1], which uses the event loop [2] provided by the vhost-user-backend crate where requests are not processed if vring is not enabled. Let's fix this issue by enabling the vrings in vhost_dev_start() for vhost-user front-ends that don't already do this directly. Same thing also in vhost_dev_stop() where we disable vrings. 2022-06-16virtio-iommu: Add bypass mode support to assigned deviceZhenzhong Duan
Currently assigned devices can not work in virtio-iommu bypass mode. Guest driver fails to probe the device due to DMA failure. And the reason is because of lacking GPA -> HPA mappings when VM is created. Add a root container memory region to hold both bypass memory region and iommu memory region, so the switch between them is supported just like the implementation in virtual VT-d. 2022-03-06virtio-iommu: Default to bypass during bootJean-Philippe Brucker
Currently the virtio-iommu device must be programmed before it allows DMA from any PCI device. This can make the VM entirely unusable when a virtio-iommu driver isn't present, for example in a bootloader that loads the OS from storage. Similarly to the other vIOMMU implementations, default to DMA bypassing the IOMMU during boot. Add a "boot-bypass" property, defaulting to true, that lets users change this behavior. Replace the VIRTIO_IOMMU_F_BYPASS feature, which didn't support bypass before feature negotiation, with VIRTIO_IOMMU_F_BYPASS_CONFIG. We add the bypass field to the migration stream without introducing subsections, based on the assumption that this virtio-iommu device isn't being used in production enough to require cross-version migration at the moment (all previous version required workarounds since they didn't support ACPI and boot-bypass). 2020-11-03virtio-iommu: Set supported page size maskBharat Bhushan
The virtio-iommu device can deal with arbitrary page sizes for virtual endpoints, but for endpoints assigned with VFIO it must follow the page granule used by the host IOMMU driver. Implement the interface to set the vIOMMU page size mask, called by VFIO for each endpoint. We assume that all host IOMMU drivers use the same page granule (the host page granule). Override the page_size_mask field in the virtio config space. 2020-07-03virtio-iommu: Implement RESV_MEM probe requestEric Auger
This patch implements the PROBE request. At the moment, only THE RESV_MEM property is handled. The first goal is to report iommu wide reserved regions such as the MSI regions set by the machine code. On x86 this will be the IOAPIC MSI region, [0xFEE00000 - 0xFEEFFFFF], on ARM this may be the ITS doorbell. In the future we may introduce per device reserved regions. However when running under TCG all RAM sections have DIRTY_MEMORY_CODE set which leads to problems down the line. 2020-02-27virtio-iommu: Implement attach/detach commandEric Auger
This patch implements the endpoint attach/detach to/from a domain. Domain and endpoint internal datatypes are introduced. Both are stored in RB trees. The domain owns a list of endpoints attached to it. Also helpers to get/put end points and domains are introduced. As for the IOMMU memory regions, a callback is called on PCI bus enumeration that initializes for a given device on the bus hierarchy an IOMMU memory region. The PCI bus hierarchy is stored locally in IOMMUPciBus and IOMMUDevice objects. At the time of the enumeration, the bus number may not be computed yet. So operations that will need to retrieve the IOMMUdevice and its IOMMU memory region from the bus number and devfn, once the bus number is garanteed to be frozen, use an array of IOMMUPciBus, lazily populated.
