2020-07-10error: Eliminate error_propagate() with Coccinelle, part 1Markus Armbruster
When all we do with an Error we receive into a local variable is propagating to somewhere else, we can just as well receive it there right away. Convert if (!foo(..., &err)) { ... error_propagate(errp, err); ... return ... } to if (!foo(..., errp)) { ... ... return ... } where nothing else needs @err. Coccinelle script: @rule1 forall@ identifier fun, err, errp, lbl; expression list args, args2; binary operator op; constant c1, c2; symbol false; @@ if ( ( - fun(args, &err, args2) + fun(args, errp, args2) | - !fun(args, &err, args2) + !fun(args, errp, args2) | - fun(args, &err, args2) op c1 + fun(args, errp, args2) op c1 ) ) { ... when != err when != lbl: when strict - error_propagate(errp, err); ... when != err ( return; | return c2; | return false; ) } @rule2 forall@ identifier fun, err, errp, lbl; expression list args, args2; expression var; binary operator op; constant c1, c2; symbol false; @@ - var = fun(args, &err, args2); + var = fun(args, errp, args2); ... when != err if ( ( var | !var | var op c1 ) ) { ... when != err when != lbl: when strict - error_propagate(errp, err); ... when != err ( return; | return c2; | return false; | return var; ) } @depends on rule1 || rule2@ identifier err; @@ - Error *err = NULL; ... when != err Not exactly elegant, I'm afraid. The "when != lbl:" is necessary to avoid transforming if (fun(args, &err)) { goto out } ... out: error_propagate(errp, err); even though other paths to label out still need the error_propagate(). For an actual example, see sclp_realize(). Without the "when strict", Coccinelle transforms vfio_msix_setup(), incorrectly. I don't know what exactly "when strict" does, only that it helps here. The match of return is narrower than what I want, but I can't figure out how to express "return where the operand doesn't use @err". For an example where it's too narrow, see vfio_intx_enable(). Silently fails to convert hw/arm/armsse.c, because Coccinelle gets confused by ARMSSE being used both as typedef and function-like macro there. Converted manually. Line breaks tidied up manually. One nested declaration of @local_err deleted manually. Preexisting unwanted blank line dropped in hw/riscv/sifive_e.c. The object_property_set_FOO() setters take property name and value in an unusual order: void object_property_set_FOO(Object *obj, FOO_TYPE value, const char *name, Error **errp) Having to pass value before name feels grating. 2020-06-23qdev: Reject chardev property overrideMarkus Armbruster
qdev_prop_set_chr() screws up when the property already has a non-null value: it neglects to release the old value. Both the old and the new backend become attached to the same device. Unlike for block devices (see previous commit), this can't be observed from the monitor (I think). Example: -serial null -chardev null,id=chr0 -global isa-serial.chardev=chr0 Special case: attempting to use the same backend both times crashes: $ qemu-system-x86_64 --nodefaults -serial null -global isa-serial.chardev=serial0 Unexpected error in qemu_chr_fe_init() at /work/armbru/qemu/chardev/char-fe.c:220: qemu-system-x86_64: Device 'serial0' is in use Aborted (core dumped) Yet another example: -device with multiple chardev=... (but not device_add, which silently drops all but the last duplicate property). Perhaps chardev property override could be made to work. Perhaps it should. I can't afford the time to figure this out now. What I can do reject usage that leaves backends in unhealthy states. For what it's worth, we've long done the same for netdev properties. 2019-08-16Include hw/qdev-properties.h lessMarkus Armbruster
In my "build everything" tree, changing hw/qdev-properties.h triggers a recompile of some 2700 out of 6600 objects (not counting tests and objects that don't depend on qemu/osdep.h). Many places including hw/qdev-properties.h (directly or via hw/qdev.h) actually need only hw/qdev-core.h. Include hw/qdev-core.h there instead. hw/qdev.h is actually pointless: all it does is include hw/qdev-core.h and hw/qdev-properties.h, which in turn includes hw/qdev-core.h. Replace the remaining uses of hw/qdev.h by hw/qdev-properties.h. While there, delete a few superfluous inclusions of hw/qdev-core.h. Touching hw/qdev-properties.h now recompiles some 1200 objects. 2019-06-04block: Add qdev_prop_drive_iothread property typeKevin Wolf
Some qdev block devices have support for iothreads and take care of the AioContext they are running in, but most devices don't know about any of this. For the latter category, the qdev drive property must make sure that their BlockBackend is in the main AioContext. Unfortunately, while the current code just does the same thing for devices that do support iothreads, this is not correct and it would show as soon as we actually try to keep a consistent AioContext assignment across all nodes and users of a block graph subtree: If a node is already in a non-default AioContext because of one of its users, attaching a new device should still be possible if that device can work in the same AioContext. Switching the node back to the main context first and only then into the device AioContext causes failure (because the existing user wouldn't allow the switch to the main context). So devices that support iothreads need a different kind of drive property that leaves the node in its current AioContext, but by using this type, the device promises to check later that it can work with this context. This patch adds the qdev infrastructure that allows devices to signal that they handle iothreads and qdev should leave the AioContext alone. Signed-off-by: Kevin Wolf <kwolf@redhat.com>
2019-06-04block: Add BlockBackend.ctxKevin Wolf
This adds a new parameter to blk_new() which requires its callers to declare from which AioContext this BlockBackend is going to be used (or the locks of which AioContext need to be taken anyway). The given context is only stored and kept up to date when changing AioContexts. Actually applying the stored AioContext to the root node is saved for another commit. 2016-07-19qapi: Change Netdev into a flat unionEric Blake
This is a mostly-mechanical conversion that creates a new flat union 'Netdev' QAPI type that covers all the branches of the former 'NetClientOptions' simple union, where the branches are now listed in a new 'NetClientDriver' enum rather than generated from the simple union. The existence of a flat union has no change to the command line syntax accepted for new code, and will make it possible for a future patch to switch the QMP command to parse a boxed union for no change to valid QMP; but it does have some ripple effect on the C code when dealing with the new types. While making the conversion, note that the 'NetLegacy' type remains unchanged: it applies only to legacy command line options, and will not be ported to QMP, so it should remain a wrapper around a simple union; to avoid confusion, the type named 'NetClientOptions' is now gone, and we introduce 'NetLegacyOptions' in its place. Then, in the C code, we convert from NetLegacy to Netdev as soon as possible, so that the bulk of the net stack only has to deal with one QAPI type, not two. Note that since the old legacy code always rejected 'hubport', we can just omit that branch from the new 'NetLegacyOptions' simple union. 2016-07-13block/qdev: Allow node name for drive propertiesKevin Wolf
If a node name instead of a BlockBackend name is specified as the driver for a guest device, an anonymous BlockBackend is created now. The order of operations in release_drive() must be reversed in order to avoid a use-after-free bug because now blk_detach_dev() frees the last reference if an anonymous BlockBackend is used. usb-storage uses a hack where it forwards its BlockBackend as a property to another device that it internally creates. This hack must be updated so that it doesn't drop its original BB before it can be passed to the other device. This used to work because we always had the monitor reference around, but with node-names the device reference is the only one now. 2016-03-22include/qemu/osdep.h: Don't include qapi/error.hMarkus Armbruster
Commit 57cb38b included qapi/error.h into qemu/osdep.h to get the Error typedef. Since then, we've moved to include qemu/osdep.h everywhere. Its file comment explains: "To avoid getting into possible circular include dependencies, this file should not include any other QEMU headers, with the exceptions of config-host.h, compiler.h, os-posix.h and os-win32.h, all of which are doing a similar job to this file and are under similar constraints." qapi/error.h doesn't do a similar job, and it doesn't adhere to similar constraints: it includes qapi-types.h. That's in excess of 100KiB of crap most .c files don't actually need. Add the typedef to qemu/typedefs.h, and include that instead of qapi/error.h. Include qapi/error.h in .c files that need it and don't get it now. Include qapi-types.h in qom/object.h for uint16List. Update scripts/clean-includes accordingly. Update it further to match reality: replace config.h by config-target.h, add sysemu/os-posix.h, sysemu/os-win32.h. Update the list of includes in the qemu/osdep.h comment quoted above similarly. This reduces the number of objects depending on qapi/error.h from "all of them" to less than a third. Unfortunately, the number depending on qapi-types.h shrinks only a little. More work is needed for that one. Signed-off-by: Markus Armbruster <armbru@redhat.com> [Fix compilation without the spice devel packages. - Paolo] Signed-off-by: Paolo Bonzini <pbonzini@redhat.com>
2016-02-08qom: Swap 'name' next to visitor in ObjectPropertyAccessorEric Blake

2016-02-08qapi: Swap visit_* arguments for consistent 'name' placementEric Blake
JSON uses "name":value, but many of our visitor interfaces were called with visit_type_FOO(v, &value, name, errp). This can be a bit confusing to have to mentally swap the parameter order to match JSON order. It's particularly bad for visit_start_struct(), where the 'name' parameter is smack in the middle of the otherwise-related group of 'obj, kind, size' parameters! It's time to do a global swap of the parameter ordering, so that the 'name' parameter is always immediately after the Visitor argument. Additional reason in favor of the swap: the existing include/qjson.h prefers listing 'name' first in json_prop_*(), and I have plans to unify that file with the qapi visitors; listing 'name' first in qapi will minimize churn to the (admittedly few) qjson.h clients. Later patches will then fix docs, object.h, visitor-impl.h, and those clients to match. Done by first patching scripts/qapi*.py by hand to make generated files do what I want, then by running the following Coccinelle script to affect the rest of the code base: $ spatch --sp-file script `git grep -l '\bvisit_' -- '**/*.[ch]'` I then had to apply some touchups (Coccinelle insisted on TAB indentation in visitor.h, and botched the signature of visit_type_enum() by rewriting 'const char *const strings[]' to the syntactically invalid 'const char*const[] strings'). The movement of parameters is sufficient to provoke compiler errors if any callers were missed. // Part 1: Swap declaration order @@ type TV, TErr, TObj, T1, T2; identifier OBJ, ARG1, ARG2; @@ void visit_start_struct -(TV v, TObj OBJ, T1 ARG1, const char *name, T2 ARG2, TErr errp) +(TV v, const char *name, TObj OBJ, T1 ARG1, T2 ARG2, TErr errp) { ... } @@ type bool, TV, T1; identifier ARG1; @@ bool visit_optional -(TV v, T1 ARG1, const char *name) +(TV v, const char *name, T1 ARG1) { ... } @@ type TV, TErr, TObj, T1; identifier OBJ, ARG1; @@ void visit_get_next_type -(TV v, TObj OBJ, T1 ARG1, const char *name, TErr errp) +(TV v, const char *name, TObj OBJ, T1 ARG1, TErr errp) { ... } @@ type TV, TErr, TObj, T1, T2; identifier OBJ, ARG1, ARG2; @@ void visit_type_enum -(TV v, TObj OBJ, T1 ARG1, T2 ARG2, const char *name, TErr errp) +(TV v, const char *name, TObj OBJ, T1 ARG1, T2 ARG2, TErr errp) { ... } @@ type TV, TErr, TObj; identifier OBJ; identifier VISIT_TYPE =~ "^visit_type_"; @@ void VISIT_TYPE -(TV v, TObj OBJ, const char *name, TErr errp) +(TV v, const char *name, TObj OBJ, TErr errp) { ... } // Part 2: swap caller order @@ expression V, NAME, OBJ, ARG1, ARG2, ERR; identifier VISIT_TYPE =~ "^visit_type_"; @@ ( -visit_start_struct(V, OBJ, ARG1, NAME, ARG2, ERR) +visit_start_struct(V, NAME, OBJ, ARG1, ARG2, ERR) | -visit_optional(V, ARG1, NAME) +visit_optional(V, NAME, ARG1) | -visit_get_next_type(V, OBJ, ARG1, NAME, ERR) +visit_get_next_type(V, NAME, OBJ, ARG1, ERR) | -visit_type_enum(V, OBJ, ARG1, ARG2, NAME, ERR) +visit_type_enum(V, NAME, OBJ, ARG1, ARG2, ERR) | -VISIT_TYPE(V, OBJ, NAME, ERR) +VISIT_TYPE(V, NAME, OBJ, ERR) ) Signed-off-by: Eric Blake <eblake@redhat.com> Reviewed-by: Marc-André Lureau <marcandre.lureau@redhat.com> Message-Id: <1454075341-13658-19-git-send-email-eblake@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Markus Armbruster <armbru@redhat.com>

2015-06-26qdev-properties-system: Improve error message for drive assignment conflictPeter Maydell
If the user forgot if=none on their drive specification they're likely to get an error message because the drive is assigned once automatically by QEMU and once by the manual id=/drive= user command line specification. Improve the error message produced in this case to explicitly guide the user towards if=none. We rephrase the "drive conflict but not for an if=something" error as well to keep the wording in line. The two cases that change are: (1) Drive specified as to be auto-connected and also manually connected (and the board does handle this if= type): qemu-system-x86_64 -nodefaults -display none \ -drive if=scsi,file=tmp.qcow2,id=foo -device ide-hd,drive=foo Previously: qemu-system-x86_64: -device ide-hd,drive=foo: Property 'ide-hd.drive' can't take value 'foo', it's in use Now: qemu-system-x86_64: -device ide-hd,drive=foo: Drive 'foo' is already in use because it has been automatically connected to another device (did you need 'if=none' in the drive options?) (2) Drive specified to be manually connected in two different ways: qemu-system-x86_64 -nodefaults -display none \ -drive if=none,file=tmp.qcow2,id=foo -device ide-hd,drive=foo \ -device ide-hd,drive=foo Previously: qemu-system-x86_64: -device ide-hd,drive=foo: Property 'ide-hd.drive' can't take value 'foo', it's in use Now: qemu-system-x86_64: -device ide-hd,drive=foo: Drive 'foo' is already in use by another device Signed-off-by: Peter Maydell <peter.maydell@linaro.org> Reviewed-by: Markus Armbruster <armbru@redhat.com> Reviewed-by: Stefan Hajnoczi <stefanha@redhat.com> Message-id: 1435068107-12594-3-git-send-email-peter.maydell@linaro.org

Three kinds of callers: 1. On failure, report the error and abort Passing &error_abort does the job. No functional change. 2. On failure, report the error and exit() This is qdev_prop_set_drive_nofail(). Error reporting moves from qdev_prop_set_drive() to its caller. Because hiding away the error in the monitor right before exit() isn't helpful, replace qerror_report_err() by error_report_err(). Shouldn't make a difference, because qdev_prop_set_drive_nofail() should never be used in QMP context. 3. On failure, report the error and recover This is usb_msd_init() and scsi_bus_legacy_add_drive(). Error reporting and freeing the error object moves from qdev_prop_set_drive() to its callers. Because usb_msd_init() can't run in QMP context, replace qerror_report_err() by error_report_err() there.
