Add deprecation message to the audio init function. Factor out audio initialization and call that from both audio init and realize, so setting the audiodev property is enough to properly initialize pcspk. Add a property alias to the machine type to set the audio device, so pcspk can be initialized using: "-machine pcspk-audiodev=<name>" Using "-global isa-pcspk.audiodev=<name>" works too but is not recommended. 2020-05-15qom: Drop parameter @errp of object_property_add() & friendsMarkus Armbruster
The only way object_property_add() can fail is when a property with the same name already exists. Since our property names are all hardcoded, failure is a programming error, and the appropriate way to handle it is passing &error_abort. Same for its variants, except for object_property_add_child(), which additionally fails when the child already has a parent. Parentage is also under program control, so this is a programming error, too. We have a bit over 500 callers. Almost half of them pass &error_abort, slightly fewer ignore errors, one test case handles errors, and the remaining few callers pass them to their own callers. The previous few commits demonstrated once again that ignoring programming errors is a bad idea. Of the few ones that pass on errors, several violate the Error API. The Error ** argument must be NULL, &error_abort, &error_fatal, or a pointer to a variable containing NULL. Passing an argument of the latter kind twice without clearing it in between is wrong: if the first call sets an error, it no longer points to NULL for the second call. ich9_pm_add_properties(), sparc32_ledma_realize(), sparc32_dma_realize(), xilinx_axidma_realize(), xilinx_enet_realize() are wrong that way. When the one appropriate choice of argument is &error_abort, letting users pick the argument is a bad idea. Drop parameter @errp and assert the preconditions instead. There's one exception to "duplicate property name is a programming error": the way object_property_add() implements the magic (and undocumented) "automatic arrayification". Don't drop @errp there. Instead, rename object_property_add() to object_property_try_add(), and add the obvious wrapper object_property_add(). In my "build everything" tree, changing hw/hw.h triggers a recompile of some 2600 out of 6600 objects (not counting tests and objects that don't depend on qemu/osdep.h). The previous commits have left only the declaration of hw_error() in hw/hw.h. This permits dropping most of its inclusions. Touching it now recompiles less than 200 objects. In my "build everything" tree, changing migration/vmstate.h triggers a recompile of some 2700 out of 6600 objects (not counting tests and objects that don't depend on qemu/osdep.h). hw/hw.h supposedly includes it for convenience. Several other headers include it just to get VMStateDescription. The previous commit made that unnecessary. Include migration/vmstate.h only where it's still needed. Touching it now recompiles only some 1600 objects. This reverts commit bd56d378842c238c8901536c06c20a4a51ee9761. Turned out it isn't that simple as the device needs the pit object link. So "-device isa-pcspk" isn't going wo work anyway. We are in freeze, so just reverting the thing is the best way to handle this for now, trying to come up with something better can be done in the 4.1 devel cycle. Also add a comment noting the object link. I had to include an enum for audio sampling formats into qapi, but that meant duplicating the audfmt_e enum. This patch replaces audfmt_e and associated values with the qapi generated AudioFormat enum. This patch is mostly a search-and-replace, except for switches where the qapi generated AUDIO_FORMAT_MAX caused problems. cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet was introduced by commit efec3dd631d94160288392721a5f9c39e50fb2bc to replace no_user. It was supposed to be a temporary measure. When it was introduced, we had 54 cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet=true lines in the code. Today (3 years later) this number has not shrunk: we now have 57 cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet=true lines. I think it is safe to say it is not a temporary measure, and we won't see the flag go away soon. Instead of a long field name that misleads people to believe it is temporary, replace it a shorter and less misleading field: user_creatable. The link property that was added to the pcspk device has the wrong type: it is only correct for TCG and for KVM's userspace or split irqchip options. The default KVM option (fully in-kernel irqchip) breaks because it uses a PIT whose type is a sibling of TYPE_I8254. 2013-12-23qdev: Replace no_user by cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yetMarkus Armbruster
In an ideal world, machines can be built by wiring devices together with configuration, not code. Unfortunately, that's not the world we live in right now. We still have quite a few devices that need to be wired up by code. If you try to device_add such a device, it'll fail in sometimes mysterious ways. If you're lucky, you get an unmysterious immediate crash. To protect users from such badness, DeviceClass member no_user used to make device models unavailable with -device / device_add, but that regressed in commit 18b6dad. The device model is still omitted from help, but is available anyway. Attempts to fix the regression have been rejected with the argument that the purpose of no_user isn't clear, and it's prone to misuse. This commit clarifies no_user's purpose. Anthony suggested to rename it cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet_due_to_internal_bugs, which I shorten somewhat to keep checkpatch happy. While there, make it bool. Every use of cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet gets a FIXME comment asking for rationale. The next few commits will clean them all up, either by providing a rationale, or by getting rid of the use. With that done, the regression fix is hopefully acceptable.
