2022-02-08hw/arm/xlnx-zcu102: Don't enable PSCI conduit when booting guest in EL3Peter Maydell
Change the Xilinx ZynqMP-based board xlnx-zcu102 to use the new boot.c functionality to allow us to enable psci-conduit only if the guest is being booted in EL1 or EL2, so that if the user runs guest EL3 firmware code our PSCI emulation doesn't get in its way. To do this we stop setting the psci-conduit property on the CPU objects in the SoC code, and instead set the psci_conduit field in the arm_boot_info struct to tell the common boot loader code that we'd like PSCI if the guest is starting at an EL that it makes sense with. Note that this means that EL3 guest code will have no way to power on secondary cores, because we don't model any kind of power controller that does that on this SoC. 2021-12-15hw/arm/xlnx-zcu102: Replace drive_get_next() by drive_get()Markus Armbruster
drive_get_next() is basically a bad idea. It returns the "next" block backend of a certain interface type. "Next" means bus=0,unit=N, where subsequent calls count N up from zero, per interface type. This lets you define unit numbers implicitly by execution order. If the order changes, or new calls appear "in the middle", unit numbers change. ABI break. Hard to spot in review. Machine "xlnx-zcu102" connects backends with drive_get_next() in several counting loops. Change it to use drive_get() directly. This makes the unit numbers explicit in the code. 2020-05-15qom: Drop parameter @errp of object_property_add() & friendsMarkus Armbruster
The only way object_property_add() can fail is when a property with the same name already exists. Since our property names are all hardcoded, failure is a programming error, and the appropriate way to handle it is passing &error_abort. Same for its variants, except for object_property_add_child(), which additionally fails when the child already has a parent. Parentage is also under program control, so this is a programming error, too. We have a bit over 500 callers. Almost half of them pass &error_abort, slightly fewer ignore errors, one test case handles errors, and the remaining few callers pass them to their own callers. The previous few commits demonstrated once again that ignoring programming errors is a bad idea. Of the few ones that pass on errors, several violate the Error API. The Error ** argument must be NULL, &error_abort, &error_fatal, or a pointer to a variable containing NULL. Passing an argument of the latter kind twice without clearing it in between is wrong: if the first call sets an error, it no longer points to NULL for the second call. ich9_pm_add_properties(), sparc32_ledma_realize(), sparc32_dma_realize(), xilinx_axidma_realize(), xilinx_enet_realize() are wrong that way. When the one appropriate choice of argument is &error_abort, letting users pick the argument is a bad idea. Drop parameter @errp and assert the preconditions instead. There's one exception to "duplicate property name is a programming error": the way object_property_add() implements the magic (and undocumented) "automatic arrayification". Don't drop @errp there. Instead, rename object_property_add() to object_property_try_add(), and add the obvious wrapper object_property_add(). 2020-05-15qom: Drop object_property_set_description() parameter @errpMarkus Armbruster
object_property_set_description() and object_class_property_set_description() fail only when property @name is not found. There are 85 calls of object_property_set_description() and object_class_property_set_description(). None of them can fail: * 84 immediately follow the creation of the property. * The one in spapr_rng_instance_init() refers to a property created in spapr_rng_class_init(), from spapr_rng_properties[]. Every one of them still gets to decide what to pass for @errp. 51 calls pass &error_abort, 32 calls pass NULL, one receives the error and propagates it to &error_abort, and one propagates it to &error_fatal. I'm actually surprised none of them violates the Error API. What are we gaining by letting callers handle the "property not found" error? Use when the property is not known to exist is simpler: you don't have to guard the call with a check. We haven't found such a use in 5+ years. Until we do, let's make life a bit simpler and drop the @errp parameter. As explained in commit aff39be0ed97: Both functions, object_initialize() and object_property_add_child() increase the reference counter of the new object, so one of the references has to be dropped afterwards to get the reference counting right. Otherwise the child object will not be properly cleaned up when the parent gets destroyed. Thus let's use now object_initialize_child() instead to get the reference counting here right. This patch was generated using the following Coccinelle script (with a bit of manual fix-up for overly long lines): @use_object_initialize_child@ expression parent_obj; expression child_ptr; expression child_name; expression child_type; expression child_size; expression errp; @@ ( - object_initialize(child_ptr, child_size, child_type); + object_initialize_child(parent_obj, child_name, child_ptr, child_size, + child_type, &error_abort, NULL); ... when != parent_obj - object_property_add_child(parent_obj, child_name, OBJECT(child_ptr), NULL); ... ?- object_unref(OBJECT(child_ptr)); | - object_initialize(child_ptr, child_size, child_type); + object_initialize_child(parent_obj, child_name, child_ptr, child_size, + child_type, errp, NULL); ... when != parent_obj - object_property_add_child(parent_obj, child_name, OBJECT(child_ptr), errp); ... ?- object_unref(OBJECT(child_ptr)); ) @use_sysbus_init_child_obj@ expression parent_obj; expression dev; expression child_ptr; expression child_name; expression child_type; expression child_size; expression errp; @@ ( - object_initialize_child(parent_obj, child_name, child_ptr, child_size, - child_type, errp, NULL); + sysbus_init_child_obj(parent_obj, child_name, child_ptr, child_size, + child_type); ... - qdev_set_parent_bus(DEVICE(child_ptr), sysbus_get_default()); | - object_initialize_child(parent_obj, child_name, child_ptr, child_size, - child_type, errp, NULL); + sysbus_init_child_obj(parent_obj, child_name, child_ptr, child_size, + child_type); - dev = DEVICE(child_ptr); - qdev_set_parent_bus(dev, sysbus_get_default()); ) While the object_initialize() function doesn't take an 'Error *errp' argument, the object_initialize_child() does. Since this code is used when a machine is created (and is not yet running), we deliberately choose to use the &error_abort argument instead of ignoring errors if an object creation failed. This choice also matches when using sysbus_init_child_obj(), since its code is: void sysbus_init_child_obj(Object *parent, const char *childname, void *child, size_t childsize, const char *childtype) { object_initialize_child(parent, childname, child, childsize, childtype, &error_abort, NULL); qdev_set_parent_bus(DEVICE(child), sysbus_get_default()); } Suggested-by: Eduardo Habkost <ehabkost@redhat.com> Inspired-by: Thomas Huth <thuth@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Philippe Mathieu-Daudé <philmd@redhat.com> Message-Id: <20190507163416.24647-9-philmd@redhat.com> Reviewed-by: Paolo Bonzini <pbonzini@redhat.com> Reviewed-by: Alistair Francis <alistair.francis@wdc.com> Signed-off-by: Eduardo Habkost <ehabkost@redhat.com>

2017-11-13hw: add .min_cpus and .default_cpus fields to machine_classEmilio G. Cota
max_cpus needs to be an upper bound on the number of vCPUs initialized; otherwise TCG region initialization breaks. Some boards initialize a hard-coded number of vCPUs, which is not captured by the global max_cpus and therefore breaks TCG initialization. Fix it by adding the .min_cpus field to machine_class. This commit also changes some user-facing behaviour: we now die if -smp is below this hard-coded vCPU minimum instead of silently ignoring the passed -smp value (sometimes announcing this by printing a warning). However, the introduction of .default_cpus lessens the likelihood that users will notice this: if -smp isn't set, we now assign the value in .default_cpus to both smp_cpus and max_cpus. IOW, if a user does not set -smp, they always get a correct number of vCPUs. This change fixes 3468b59 ("tcg: enable multiple TCG contexts in softmmu", 2017-10-24), which broke TCG initialization for some ARM boards.
