2021-01-08hw/arm/highbank: Drop dead KVM support codePeter Maydell
Support for running KVM on 32-bit Arm hosts was removed in commit 82bf7ae84ce739e. You can still run a 32-bit guest on a 64-bit Arm host CPU, but because Arm KVM requires the host and guest CPU types to match, it is not possible to run a guest that requires a Cortex-A9 or Cortex-A15 CPU there. That means that the code in the highbank/midway board models to support KVM is no longer used, and we can delete it. 2020-09-22qom: simplify object_find_property / object_class_find_propertyDaniel P. Berrangé
When debugging QEMU it is often useful to put a breakpoint on the error_setg_internal method impl. Unfortunately the object_property_add / object_class_property_add methods call object_property_find / object_class_property_find methods to check if a property exists already before adding the new property. As a result there are a huge number of calls to error_setg_internal on startup of most QEMU commands, making it very painful to set a breakpoint on this method. Most callers of object_find_property and object_class_find_property, however, pass in a NULL for the Error parameter. This simplifies the methods to remove the Error parameter entirely, and then adds some new wrapper methods that are able to raise an Error when needed. Signed-off-by: Daniel P. 2020-02-19arm/highbank: use memdev for RAMIgor Mammedov
memory_region_allocate_system_memory() API is going away, so replace it with memdev allocated MemoryRegion. The later is initialized by generic code, so board only needs to opt in to memdev scheme by providing MachineClass::default_ram_id and using MachineState::ram instead of manually initializing RAM memory region. 2019-08-16sysemu: Split sysemu/runstate.h off sysemu/sysemu.hMarkus Armbruster
sysemu/sysemu.h is a rather unfocused dumping ground for stuff related to the system-emulator. Evidence: * It's included widely: in my "build everything" tree, changing sysemu/sysemu.h still triggers a recompile of some 1100 out of 6600 objects (not counting tests and objects that don't depend on qemu/osdep.h, down from 5400 due to the previous two commits). * It pulls in more than a dozen additional headers. Split stuff related to run state management into its own header sysemu/runstate.h. Touching sysemu/sysemu.h now recompiles some 850 objects. qemu/uuid.h also drops from 1100 to 850, and qapi/qapi-types-run-state.h from 4400 to 4200. Touching new sysemu/runstate.h recompiles some 500 objects. Since I'm touching MAINTAINERS to add sysemu/runstate.h anyway, also add qemu/main-loop.h. In my "build everything" tree, changing migration/vmstate.h triggers a recompile of some 2700 out of 6600 objects (not counting tests and objects that don't depend on qemu/osdep.h). hw/hw.h supposedly includes it for convenience. Several other headers include it just to get VMStateDescription. The previous commit made that unnecessary. Include migration/vmstate.h only where it's still needed. Touching it now recompiles only some 1600 objects. The header file hw/arm/arm.h now includes only declarations relating to hw/arm/boot.c functionality. Rename it accordingly, and adjust its header comment. 2018-04-26hw/arm/highbank: don't make sysram 'nomigrate'Peter Maydell
Currently we use memory_region_init_ram_nomigrate() to create the "highbank.sysram" memory region, and we don't manually register it with vmstate_register_ram(). This currently means that its contents are migrated but as a ram block whose name is the empty string; in future it may mean they are not migrated at all. Use memory_region_init_ram() instead. Note that this is a cross-version migration compatibility break for the "highbank" and "midway" machines. there are 2 use cases to deal with: 1: fixed CPU models per board/soc 2: boards with user configurable cpu_model and fallback to default cpu_model if user hasn't specified one explicitly For the 1st drop intermediate cpu_model parsing and use const cpu type directly, which replaces: typename = object_class_get_name( cpu_class_by_name(TYPE_ARM_CPU, cpu_model)) object_new(typename) with object_new(FOO_CPU_TYPE_NAME) or cpu_generic_init(BASE_CPU_TYPE, "my cpu model") with cpu_create(FOO_CPU_TYPE_NAME) as result 1st use case doesn't have to invoke not necessary translation and not needed code is removed. For the 2nd 1: set default cpu type with MachineClass::default_cpu_type and 2: use generic cpu_model parsing that done before machine_init() is run and: 2.1: drop custom cpu_model parsing where pattern is: typename = object_class_get_name( cpu_class_by_name(TYPE_ARM_CPU, cpu_model)) [parse_features(typename, cpu_model, &err) ] 2.2: or replace cpu_generic_init() which does what 2.1 does + create_cpu(typename) with just create_cpu(machine->cpu_type) as result cpu_name -> cpu_type translation is done using generic machine code one including parsing optional features if supported/present (removes a bunch of duplicated cpu_model parsing code) and default cpu type is defined in an uniform way within machine_class_init callbacks instead of adhoc places in boadr's machine_init code. Set the MachineClass flag ignore_memory_transaction_failures for almost all ARM boards. This means they retain the legacy behaviour that accesses to unimplemented addresses will RAZ/WI rather than aborting, when a subsequent commit adds support for external aborts. The exceptions are: * virt -- we know that guests won't try to prod devices that we don't describe in the device tree or ACPI tables * mps2 -- this board was written to use unimplemented-device for all the ranges with devices we don't yet handle New boards should not set the flag, but instead be written like the mps2. Time to wire up all the call sites that request a shutdown or reset to use the enum added in the previous patch. It would have been less churn to keep the common case with no arguments as meaning guest-triggered, and only modified the host-triggered code paths, via a wrapper function, but then we'd still have to audit that I didn't miss any host-triggered spots; changing the signature forces us to double-check that I correctly categorized all callers. Since command line options can change whether a guest reset request causes an actual reset vs. a shutdown, it's easy to also add the information to reset requests. Commit 57cb38b included qapi/error.h into qemu/osdep.h to get the Error typedef. Since then, we've moved to include qemu/osdep.h everywhere. Its file comment explains: "To avoid getting into possible circular include dependencies, this file should not include any other QEMU headers, with the exceptions of config-host.h, compiler.h, os-posix.h and os-win32.h, all of which are doing a similar job to this file and are under similar constraints." qapi/error.h doesn't do a similar job, and it doesn't adhere to similar constraints: it includes qapi-types.h. That's in excess of 100KiB of crap most .c files don't actually need. Add the typedef to qemu/typedefs.h, and include that instead of qapi/error.h. Include qapi/error.h in .c files that need it and don't get it now. Include qapi-types.h in qom/object.h for uint16List. Update scripts/clean-includes accordingly. Update it further to match reality: replace config.h by config-target.h, add sysemu/os-posix.h, sysemu/os-win32.h. Update the list of includes in the qemu/osdep.h comment quoted above similarly. This reduces the number of objects depending on qapi/error.h from "all of them" to less than a third. Unfortunately, the number depending on qapi-types.h shrinks only a little. 2015-11-10arm: highbank: Implement PSCI and dummy monitorPeter Crosthwaite
Firstly, enable monitor mode and PSCI, both of which are features of this board. In addition to PSCI, this board also uses SMC for cache maintenance ops. This means we need a secure monitor to catch these and nop them. Use the ARM boot board-setup feature to implement this. The SMC trap implements the needed nop while all other traps will pen the CPU. As a KVM CPU cannot run in secure mode, do not do the board-setup if not running TCG. Report a warning explaining the limitation in this case. Symptom: $ qemu-system-x86_64 -m 10000000 Unexpected error in ram_block_add() at /work/armbru/qemu/exec.c:1456: upstream-qemu: cannot set up guest memory 'pc.ram': Cannot allocate memory Aborted (core dumped) Root cause: commit ef701d7 screwed up handling of out-of-memory conditions. Before the commit, we report the error and exit(1), in one place, ram_block_add(). The commit lifts the error handling up the call chain some, to three places. Fine. Except it uses &error_abort in these places, changing the behavior from exit(1) to abort(), and thus undoing the work of commit 3922825 "exec: Don't abort when we can't allocate guest memory". The three places are: * memory_region_init_ram() Commit 4994653 (right after commit ef701d7) lifted the error handling further, through memory_region_init_ram(), multiplying the incorrect use of &error_abort. Later on, imitation of existing (bad) code may have created more. * memory_region_init_ram_ptr() The &error_abort is still there. * memory_region_init_rom_device() Doesn't need fixing, because commit 33e0eb5 (soon after commit ef701d7) lifted the error handling further, and in the process changed it from &error_abort to passing it up the call chain. Correct, because the callers are realize() methods. Fix the error handling after memory_region_init_ram() with a Coccinelle semantic patch: @r@ expression mr, owner, name, size, err; position p; @@ memory_region_init_ram(mr, owner, name, size, ( - &error_abort + &error_fatal | err@p ) ); @script:python@ p << r.p; @@ print "%s:%s:%s" % (p[0].file, p[0].line, p[0].column) When the last argument is &error_abort, it gets replaced by &error_fatal. This is the fix. If the last argument is anything else, its position is reported. This lets us check the fix is complete. Four positions get reported: * ram_backend_memory_alloc() Error is passed up the call chain, ultimately through user_creatable_complete(). As far as I can tell, it's callers all handle the error sanely. * fsl_imx25_realize(), fsl_imx31_realize(), dp8393x_realize() DeviceClass.realize() methods, errors handled sanely further up the call chain. We're good. Test case again behaves: $ qemu-system-x86_64 -m 10000000 qemu-system-x86_64: cannot set up guest memory 'pc.ram': Cannot allocate memory [Exit 1 ] The next commits will repair the rest of commit ef701d7's damage.
