2023-08-31accel: Remove HAX acceleratorPhilippe Mathieu-Daudé
HAX is deprecated since commits 73741fda6c ("MAINTAINERS: Abort HAXM maintenance") and 90c167a1da ("docs/about/deprecated: Mark HAXM in QEMU as deprecated"), released in v8.0.0. Per the latest HAXM release (v7.8 [*]), the latest QEMU supported is v7.2: Note: Up to this release, HAXM supports QEMU from 2.9.0 to 7.2.0. The next commit (https://github.com/intel/haxm/commit/da1b8ec072) added: HAXM v7.8.0 is our last release and we will not accept pull requests or respond to issues after this. It became very hard to build and test HAXM. Its previous maintainers made it clear they won't help. It doesn't seem to be a very good use of QEMU maintainers to spend their time in a dead project. Save our time by removing this orphan zombie code. 2023-02-02docs: add an introduction to the system docsAlex Bennée
Drop the frankly misleading quickstart section for a more rounded introduction section. This new section gives an overview of the accelerators as well as a high level introduction to some of the key features of the emulator. We also expand on a general form for a QEMU command line with a hopefully not too scary worked example of what this looks like. 2021-09-13docs: standardize directory index to --- with overlinePaolo Bonzini
Use a standard heading format for the index.rst file in a directory. Using overlines makes it clear that individual documents can use e.g. === for chapter titles and --- for section titles, as suggested in the Linux kernel guidelines[1]. They could do it anyway, because documents included in a toctree are parsed separately and therefore are not tied to the same conventions for headings. However, keeping some consistency is useful since sometimes files are included from multiple places. 2020-01-23qemu-block-drivers: Convert to rSTPeter Maydell
The qemu-block-drivers documentation is currently in docs/qemu-block-drivers.texi in Texinfo format, which we present to the user as: * a qemu-block-drivers manpage * a section of the main qemu-doc HTML documentation Convert the documentation to rST format, and present it to the user as: * a qemu-block-drivers manpage * part of the system/ Sphinx manual This follows the same pattern we've done for qemu-ga and qemu-nbd. We have to drop a cross-reference from the documentation of the -cdrom option back to the qemu-block-drivers documentation, since they're no longer within the same texinfo document. As noted in a comment, the manpage output is slightly compromised due to limitations in Sphinx. In an ideal world, the HTML output would have the various headings like 'Disk image file formats' as top-level section headings (which then appear in the overall system manual's table-of-contents), and it would not have the section headings which make sense only for the manpage like 'synopsis', 'description', and 'see also'. Unfortunately, the mechanism Sphinx provides for restricting pieces of documentation is limited to the point of being flawed: the 'only::' directive is implemented as a filter that is applied at a very late stage in the document processing pipeline, rather than as an early equivalent of an #ifdef. This means that Sphinx's process of identifying which section heading markup styles are which levels of heading gets confused if the 'only::' directive contains section headings which would affect the heading-level of a later heading. I have opted to prioritise making the HTML format look better, with the compromise being that in the manpage the 'Disk image file formats' &c headings are top-level headings rather than being sub-headings under the traditional 'Description' top-level section title.
