We merged our previous multiple-manual setup into a single Sphinx manual, but we left some text in the various index.rst lines that still calls the top level subsections separate 'manuals'. Update them to talk about "this section of the manual" instead, and remove now-obsolete comments about how the index.rst files are the "top level page for the 'foo' manual". 2021-07-14tcg/plugins: enable by default for most TCG buildsAlex Bennée
Aside from a minor bloat to file size the ability to have TCG plugins has no real impact on performance unless a plugin is actively loaded. Even then the libempty.so plugin shows only a minor degradation in performance caused by the extra book keeping the TCG has to do to keep track of instructions. As it's a useful feature lets just enable it by default and reduce our testing matrix a little. We need to move our linker testing earlier so we can be sure we can enable the loader module required. As we have ruled out static & plugins in an earlier patch we can also reduce the indent a little. 2021-07-14Jobs based on custom runners: docs and gitlab-runner setup playbookCleber Rosa
To have the jobs dispatched to custom runners, gitlab-runner must be installed, active as a service and properly configured. The variables file and playbook introduced here should help with those steps. The playbook introduced here covers the Linux distributions and has been primarily tested on OS/machines that the QEMU project has available to act as runners, namely: * Ubuntu 20.04 on aarch64 * Ubuntu 18.04 on s390x But, it should work on all other Linux distributions. Earlier versions were tested on FreeBSD too, so chances of success are high. To run basic jobs on custom runners, the environment needs to be properly set up. The most common requirement is having the right packages installed. The playbook introduced here covers the QEMU's project s390x and aarch64 machines. At the time this is being proposed, those machines have already had this playbook applied to them. 2021-07-14Jobs based on custom runners: documentation and configuration placeholderCleber Rosa
As described in the included documentation, the "custom runner" jobs extend the GitLab CI jobs already in place. One of their primary goals of catching and preventing regressions on a wider number of host systems than the ones provided by GitLab's shared runners. This sets the stage in which other community members can add their own machine configuration documentation/scripts, and accompanying job definitions. As a general rule, those newly added contributed jobs should run as "non-gating", until their reliability is verified (AKA "allow_failure: true"). 2021-07-13Acceptance Tests: support choosing specific distro and versionCleber Rosa
The tests based on the LinuxTest class give the test writer a ready to use guest operating system, currently pinned to Fedora 31. With this change, it's now possible to choose different distros and versions, similar to how other tags and parameter can be set for the target arch, accelerator, etc. One of the reasons for this work, is that some development features depend on updates on the guest side. For instance the tests on virtiofs_submounts.py, require newer kernels, and may benefit from running, say on Fedora 34, without the need for a custom kernel. Please notice that the pre-caching of the Fedora 31 images done during the early stages of `make check-acceptance` (before the tests are actually executed) are not expanded here to cover every new image added. But, the tests will download other needed images (and cache them) during the first execution. The default "alabaster" sphinx theme has a couple shortcomings: - the navbar moves along the page - the search bar is not always at the same place - it lacks some contrast and colours The "rtd" theme from readthedocs.org is a popular third party theme used notably by the kernel, with a custom style sheet. I like it better, perhaps others do too. It also simplifies the "Edit on Gitlab" links. In an ideal world, we would all get along together very well, always be polite and never end up in huge conflicts. And even if there are conflicts, we would always handle each other fair and respectfully. Unfortunately, this is not an ideal world and sometimes people forget how to interact with each other in a professional and respectful way. Fortunately, this seldom happens in the QEMU community, but for such rare cases it is preferrable to have a basic code of conduct document available to show to people who are misbehaving. In case that does not help yet, we should also have a conflict resolution policy ready that can be applied in the worst case. The Code of Conduct document tries to be short and to the point while trying to remain friendly and welcoming; it is based on the Fedora Code of Conduct[1] with extra detail added based on the Contributor Covenant 1.3.0[2]. Other proposals included the Contributor Covenant 1.3.0 itself or the Django Code of Conduct[3] (which is also a derivative of Fedora's) but, in any case, there was agreement on keeping the conflict resolution policy separate from the CoC itself. An important point is whether to apply the code of conduct to violations that occur outside public spaces. The text herein restricts that to individuals acting as a representative or a member of the project or its community. This is intermediate between the Contributor Covenant (which only mentions representatives of the community, for example using an official project e-mail address or posting via an official social media account), and the Django Code of Conduct, which says that violations of this code outside these spaces "may" be considered but otherwise applies no limit. The conflict resolution policy is based on the Drupal Conflict Resolution Policy[4] and its derivative, the Mozilla Consequence Ladder[5].
