2022-07-22docs: Add caveats for Windows as the build platformBin Meng
Commit cf60ccc3306c ("cutils: Introduce bundle mechanism") introduced a Python script to populate a bundle directory using os.symlink() to point to the binaries in the pc-bios directory of the source tree. Commit 882084a04ae9 ("datadir: Use bundle mechanism") removed previous logic in pc-bios/meson.build to create a link/copy of pc-bios binaries in the build tree so os.symlink() is the way to go. However os.symlink() may fail [1] on Windows if an unprivileged Windows user started the QEMU build process, which results in QEMU executables generated in the build tree not able to load the default BIOS/firmware images due to symbolic links not present in the bundle directory. This commits updates the documentation by adding such caveats for users who want to build QEMU on the Windows platform. 2022-07-13cutils: Introduce bundle mechanismAkihiko Odaki
Developers often run QEMU without installing. The bundle mechanism allows to look up files which should be present in installation even in such a situation. It is a general mechanism and can find any files in the installation tree. The build tree will have a new directory, qemu-bundle, to represent what files the installation tree would have for reference by the executables. Note that it abandons compatibility with Windows older than 8. The extended support for the prior version, 7 ended more than 2 years ago, and it is unlikely that someone would like to run the latest QEMU on such an old system. 2022-07-07hw/arm/virt: dt: add rng-seed propertyJason A. Donenfeld
In 60592cfed2 ("hw/arm/virt: dt: add kaslr-seed property"), the kaslr-seed property was added, but the equally as important rng-seed property was forgotten about, which has identical semantics for a similar purpose. This commit implements it in exactly the same way as kaslr-seed. It then changes the name of the disabling option to reflect that this has more to do with randomness vs determinism, rather than something particular about kaslr. 2022-06-03hw/nvme: do not auto-generate eui64Klaus Jensen
We cannot provide auto-generated unique or persistent namespace identifiers (EUI64, NGUID, UUID) easily. Since 6.1, namespaces have been assigned a generated EUI64 of the form "52:54:00:<namespace counter>". This is will be unique within a QEMU instance, but not globally. Revert that this is assigned automatically and immediately deprecate the compatibility parameter. Users can opt-in to this with the `eui64-default=on` device parameter or set it explicitly with `eui64=UINT64`. 2022-05-18docs/about: Update the support statement for WindowsThomas Huth
Our support statement for Windows currently talks about "Vista / Server 2008" - which is related to the API of Windows, and this is not easy to understand for the non-technical users. Additionally, glib sets the _WIN32_WINNT macro to 0x0601 already, which indicates the Windows 7 API, so QEMU effectively depends on the Windows 7 API, too. Thus let's bump the _WIN32_WINNT setting in QEMU to the same level as glib uses and adjust our support statement in the documentation to something similar that we're using for Linux and the *BSD systems (i.e. only the two most recent versions), which should hopefully be easier to understand for the users now. And since we're nowadays also compile-testing QEMU with MSYS2 on Windows itself, I think we could mention this build environment here, too. 2022-05-14introduce -audio as a replacement for -soundhwPaolo Bonzini
-audio is used like "-audio pa,model=sb16". It is almost as simple as -soundhw, but it reuses the -audiodev parsing machinery and attaches an audiodev to the newly-created device. The main 'feature' is that it knows about adding the codec device for model=intel-hda, and adding the audiodev to the codec device. In the future, it could be extended to support default models or builtin devices, just like -nic, or even a default backend. For now, keep it simple. Like -set and -readconfig, it would not really be too hard to extend -writeconfig to parsing mechanisms other than QemuOpts. However, the uses of -writeconfig are substantially more limited, as it is generally easier to write the configuration by hand in the first place. In addition, -writeconfig does not even try to detect cases where it prints incorrect syntax (for example if values have a quote in them, since qemu_config_parse does not support any kind of escaping. The list of machine types grows larger and larger each release ... and it is unlikely that many people still use the very old ones for live migration. QEMU v1.7 has been released more than 8 years ago, so most people should have updated their machines to a newer version in those 8 years at least once. 2021-12-17ppc: Mark the 'taihu' machine as deprecatedThomas Huth
The PPC 405 CPU is a system-on-a-chip, so all 405 machines are very similar, except for some external periphery. However, the periphery of the 'taihu' machine is hardly emulated at all (e.g. neither the LCD nor the USB part had been implemented), so there is not much value added by this board. The users can use the 'ref405ep' machine to test their PPC405 code instead. 2021-11-22hw/misc/sifive_u_otp: Use IF_PFLASH for the OTP device instead of IF_NONEThomas Huth
Configuring a drive with "if=none" is meant for creation of a backend only, it should not get automatically assigned to a device frontend. Use "if=pflash" for the One-Time-Programmable device instead (like it is e.g. also done for the efuse device in hw/arm/xlnx-zcu102.c). Since the old way of configuring the device has already been published with the previous QEMU versions, we cannot remove this immediately, but have to deprecate it and support it for at least two more releases. While introducing a non-QemuOpts code path for device creation for JSON -device, we noticed that QMP device_add doesn't check its input correctly (accepting arguments that should have been rejected), and that users may be relying on this behaviour (libvirt did until it was fixed recently). Let's use a deprecation period before we fix this bug in QEMU to avoid nasty surprises for users. 2021-11-09qapi: deprecate drive-backupVladimir Sementsov-Ogievskiy
Modern way is using blockdev-add + blockdev-backup, which provides a lot more control on how target is opened. As example of drive-backup problems consider the following: User of drive-backup expects that target will be opened in the same cache and aio mode as source. Corresponding logic is in drive_backup_prepare(), where we take bs->open_flags of source. It works rather bad if source was added by blockdev-add. Assume source is qcow2 image. On blockdev-add we should specify aio and cache options for file child of qcow2 node. What happens next: drive_backup_prepare() looks at bs->open_flags of qcow2 source node. But there no BDRV_O_NOCAHE neither BDRV_O_NATIVE_AIO: BDRV_O_NOCAHE is places in bs->file->bs->open_flags, and BDRV_O_NATIVE_AIO is nowhere, as file-posix parse options and simply set s->use_linux_aio. The documentation is updated in a minimal way, so that drive-backup is noted only as a deprecated command, and blockdev-backup used in most of places. -watchdog is the same as -device except that it is case insensitive (and it allows only watchdog devices of course). Now that "-device help" can list as such the available watchdog devices, we can deprecate it. Note that even though -watchdog tries to be case insensitive, it fails at that: "-watchdog i6300xyz" fails with "Unknown -watchdog device", but "-watchdog i6300ESB" also fails (when the generated -device option is processed) with an error "'i6300ESB' is not a valid device model name". 2021-10-27qapi: Enable enum member introspection to show more than nameMarkus Armbruster
The next commit will add feature flags to enum members. There's a problem, though: query-qmp-schema shows an enum type's members as an array of member names (SchemaInfoEnum member @values). If it showed an array of objects with a name member, we could simply add more members to these objects. Since it's just strings, we can't. I can see three ways to correct this design mistake: 1. Do it the way we should have done it, plus compatibility goo. We want a ['SchemaInfoEnumMember'] member in SchemaInfoEnum. Since changing @values would be a compatibility break, add a new member @members instead. @values is now redundant. In my testing, output of qemu-system-x86_64's query-qmp-schema grows by 11% (18.5KiB). We can deprecate @values now and drop it later. This will break outmoded clients. Well-behaved clients such as libvirt are expected to break cleanly. 2. Like 1, but omit "boring" elements of @member, and empty @member. @values does not become redundant. @members augments it. Somewhat cumbersome, but output of query-qmp-schema grows only as we make enum members non-boring. There is nothing to deprecate here. 3. Versioned query-qmp-schema. query-qmp-schema provides either @values or @members. The QMP client can select which version it wants. There is no redundant output. We can deprecate old versions and eventually drop them. This will break outmoded clients. Breaking cleanly is easier than for 1. While 1 and 2 operate within the common rules for compatible evolution apply (section "Compatibility considerations" in docs/devel/qapi-code-gen.rst), 3 bypasses them. Attractive when operating within the rules is just too awkward. Not the case here. This commit implements 1. Libvirt developers prefer it. Deprecate @values in favour of @members. Since query-qmp-schema compatibility is pretty fundamental for management applications, an extended grace period is advised. 2021-10-01machine: Deprecate "parameter=0" SMP configurationsYanan Wang
In the SMP configuration, we should either provide a topology parameter with a reasonable value (greater than zero) or just omit it and QEMU will compute the missing value. The users shouldn't provide a configuration with any parameter of it specified as zero (e.g. -smp 8,sockets=0) which could possibly cause unexpected results in the -smp parsing. So we deprecate this kind of configurations since 6.2 by adding the explicit sanity check. At this moment we only provide one event to report a hotunplug error, MEM_UNPLUG_ERROR. As of Linux kernel 5.12 and QEMU 6.0.0, the pseries machine is now able to report unplug errors for other device types, such as CPUs. Instead of creating a (device_type)_UNPLUG_ERROR for each new device, create a generic DEVICE_UNPLUG_GUEST_ERROR event that can be used by all guest side unplug errors in the future. This event has a similar API as the existing DEVICE_DELETED event, always providing the QOM path of the device and dev->id if there's any. With this new generic event, MEM_UNPLUG_ERROR is now marked as deprecated. Use a standard heading format for the index.rst file in a directory. Using overlines makes it clear that individual documents can use e.g. === for chapter titles and --- for section titles, as suggested in the Linux kernel guidelines[1]. They could do it anyway, because documents included in a toctree are parsed separately and therefore are not tied to the same conventions for headings. However, keeping some consistency is useful since sometimes files are included from multiple places.
