2024-07-16ui/console: Remove dpy_cursor_define_supported()Akihiko Odaki
Remove dpy_cursor_define_supported() as it brings no benefit today and it has a few inherent problems. All graphical displays except egl-headless support cursor composition without DMA-BUF, and egl-headless is meant to be used in conjunction with another graphical display, so dpy_cursor_define_supported() always returns true and meaningless. Even if we add a new display without cursor composition in the future, dpy_cursor_define_supported() will be problematic as a cursor display fix for it because some display devices like virtio-gpu cannot tell the lack of cursor composition capability to the guest and are unable to utilize the value the function returns. Therefore, all non-headless graphical displays must actually implement cursor composition for correct cursor display. Another problem with dpy_cursor_define_supported() is that it returns true even if only some of the display listeners support cursor composition, which is wrong unless all display listeners that lack cursor composition is headless. 2023-01-08include/hw/pci: Split pci_device.h off pci.hMarkus Armbruster
PCIDeviceClass and PCIDevice are defined in pci.h. Many users of the header don't actually need them. Similar structs live in their own headers: PCIBusClass and PCIBus in pci_bus.h, PCIBridge in pci_bridge.h, PCIHostBridgeClass and PCIHostState in pci_host.h, PCIExpressHost in pcie_host.h, and PCIERootPortClass, PCIEPort, and PCIESlot in pcie_port.h. Move PCIDeviceClass and PCIDeviceClass to new pci_device.h, along with the code that needs them. Adjust include directives. This also enables the next commit. 2022-04-22hw/display/vmware_vga: do not discard screen updatesCarwyn Ellis
In certain circumstances, typically when there is lots changing on the screen, updates will be discarded resulting in garbled output. This change simplifies the traversal of the display update FIFO queue when applying updates. We just track the queue length and iterate up to the end of the queue. Additionally when adding updates to the queue, if the buffer reaches capacity we force a flush before accepting further events. 2021-01-27hw/display/vmware_vga: Remove dependency on VNC headerPeter Maydell
In commit 2f487a3d40faff1 we fixed a problem observed with using the vmware-vga device and the VNC UI frontend in a belt-and-braces manner: * we made the VNC frontend handle non-multiple-of-16 surface widths * we rounded up the vmware-vga display width to a multiple of 16 However this introduced a spurious dependency of a device model on a UI frontend header. vmware-vga isn't special and should not care about what UI frontend it is using, and the VNC frontend needs to handle arbitrary surface widths because other display device models could use them. Moreover, even if the maximum width in vmware-vga is made a multiple of 16, the guest itself can always program a different width. Remove the dependency on the VNC header. Since we have been using the rounded-up width value since 2014, stick with it rather than introducing a behaviour change, but don't calculate it by rounding up to VNC_DIRTY_BITS_PER_PIXEL any more. In my "build everything" tree, changing hw/qdev-properties.h triggers a recompile of some 2700 out of 6600 objects (not counting tests and objects that don't depend on qemu/osdep.h). Many places including hw/qdev-properties.h (directly or via hw/qdev.h) actually need only hw/qdev-core.h. Include hw/qdev-core.h there instead. hw/qdev.h is actually pointless: all it does is include hw/qdev-core.h and hw/qdev-properties.h, which in turn includes hw/qdev-core.h. Replace the remaining uses of hw/qdev.h by hw/qdev-properties.h. While there, delete a few superfluous inclusions of hw/qdev-core.h. Touching hw/qdev-properties.h now recompiles some 1200 objects. Move global_vmstate from vga_common_init() parameter to VGACommonState field. Set global_vmstate to true for isa vga devices, so nothing changes here. virtio-vga and secondary-vga already set global_vmstate to false so no change here either. All other pci vga devices get a new global-vmstate property, defaulting to false. A compat property flips it to true for older machine types. With this in place you don't get a vmstate section naming conflict any more when adding multiple pci vga devices to your vm. 2017-06-28vmstate: error hint for failed equal checksHalil Pasic
In some cases a failing VMSTATE_*_EQUAL does not mean we detected a bug, but it's actually the best we can do. Especially in these cases a verbose error message is required. Let's introduce infrastructure for specifying a error hint to be used if equal check fails. Let's do this by adding a parameter to the _EQUAL macros called _err_hint. Also change all current users to pass NULL as last parameter so nothing changes for them. The fifo is normal ram. So kvm vcpu threads and qemu iothread can access the fifo in parallel without syncronization. Which in turn implies we can't use the fifo pointers in-place because the guest can try changing them underneath us. So add shadows for them, to make sure the guest can't modify them after we've applied sanity checks. Commit 57cb38b included qapi/error.h into qemu/osdep.h to get the Error typedef. Since then, we've moved to include qemu/osdep.h everywhere. Its file comment explains: "To avoid getting into possible circular include dependencies, this file should not include any other QEMU headers, with the exceptions of config-host.h, compiler.h, os-posix.h and os-win32.h, all of which are doing a similar job to this file and are under similar constraints." qapi/error.h doesn't do a similar job, and it doesn't adhere to similar constraints: it includes qapi-types.h. That's in excess of 100KiB of crap most .c files don't actually need. Add the typedef to qemu/typedefs.h, and include that instead of qapi/error.h. Include qapi/error.h in .c files that need it and don't get it now. Include qapi-types.h in qom/object.h for uint16List. Update scripts/clean-includes accordingly. Update it further to match reality: replace config.h by config-target.h, add sysemu/os-posix.h, sysemu/os-win32.h. Update the list of includes in the qemu/osdep.h comment quoted above similarly. This reduces the number of objects depending on qapi/error.h from "all of them" to less than a third. Unfortunately, the number depending on qapi-types.h shrinks only a little. Symptom: $ qemu-system-x86_64 -m 10000000 Unexpected error in ram_block_add() at /work/armbru/qemu/exec.c:1456: upstream-qemu: cannot set up guest memory 'pc.ram': Cannot allocate memory Aborted (core dumped) Root cause: commit ef701d7 screwed up handling of out-of-memory conditions. Before the commit, we report the error and exit(1), in one place, ram_block_add(). The commit lifts the error handling up the call chain some, to three places. Fine. Except it uses &error_abort in these places, changing the behavior from exit(1) to abort(), and thus undoing the work of commit 3922825 "exec: Don't abort when we can't allocate guest memory". The three places are: * memory_region_init_ram() Commit 4994653 (right after commit ef701d7) lifted the error handling further, through memory_region_init_ram(), multiplying the incorrect use of &error_abort. Later on, imitation of existing (bad) code may have created more. * memory_region_init_ram_ptr() The &error_abort is still there. * memory_region_init_rom_device() Doesn't need fixing, because commit 33e0eb5 (soon after commit ef701d7) lifted the error handling further, and in the process changed it from &error_abort to passing it up the call chain. Correct, because the callers are realize() methods. Fix the error handling after memory_region_init_ram() with a Coccinelle semantic patch: @r@ expression mr, owner, name, size, err; position p; @@ memory_region_init_ram(mr, owner, name, size, ( - &error_abort + &error_fatal | err@p ) ); @script:python@ p << r.p; @@ print "%s:%s:%s" % (p[0].file, p[0].line, p[0].column) When the last argument is &error_abort, it gets replaced by &error_fatal. This is the fix. If the last argument is anything else, its position is reported. This lets us check the fix is complete. Four positions get reported: * ram_backend_memory_alloc() Error is passed up the call chain, ultimately through user_creatable_complete(). As far as I can tell, it's callers all handle the error sanely. * fsl_imx25_realize(), fsl_imx31_realize(), dp8393x_realize() DeviceClass.realize() methods, errors handled sanely further up the call chain. We're good. Test case again behaves: $ qemu-system-x86_64 -m 10000000 qemu-system-x86_64: cannot set up guest memory 'pc.ram': Cannot allocate memory [Exit 1 ] The next commits will repair the rest of commit ef701d7's damage. memory_region_get_dirty_log_mask For now memory regions only track DIRTY_MEMORY_VGA individually, but this will change soon. To support this, split memory_region_is_logging in two functions: one that returns a given bit from dirty_log_mask, and one that returns the entire mask. memory_region_is_logging gets an extra parameter so that the compiler flags misuse. While VGA-specific users (including the Xen listener!) will want to keep checking that bit, KVM and vhost check for "any bit except migration" (because migration is handled via the global start/stop listener callbacks).
