Merge remote-tracking branch 'remotes/vivier2/tags/trivial-branch-pull-request' into staging

- some configure updates (HAX/NetBSD, remove "wav", -Waddress-of-packed-member)
- remove deprecated options
- some trace and error cleanup
- typo fixes
